Free Asbestos Pick-Up NSW - Coming in 2027

The NSW Government has announced a free household asbestos pick-up and disposal trial, expected to commence in 2027.

 

The program is designed to make the safe disposal of smaller quantities of household asbestos waste easier and reduce illegal dumping across NSW.

 

For homeowners in Byron Bay, Ballina, Tweed, Mullumbimby, Brunswick Heads, Ocean Shores, Murwillumbah and throughout the Northern Rivers, the new service could reduce the cost of disposing of eligible household asbestos waste.

What Is the NSW Free Asbestos Pick-Up Service?

 

The NSW Government has committed funding for a two-year trial providing free collection and disposal of eligible household asbestos waste.

 

The service is expected to commence in 2027.

 

Full details including eligibility, quantity limits, participating locations and the collection process are still being developed.

Does Free Pick-Up Mean Free Asbestos Removal?

 

No.

 

The proposed program relates to the collection and disposal of eligible asbestos waste. It does not make asbestos testing, assessment or professional asbestos removal free.

 

NSW asbestos removal requirements will continue to apply.

 

More than 10m² of non-friable asbestos must be removed by a licensed asbestos removalist.

 

Any amount of friable asbestos must be removed by a Class A licensed asbestos removalist.
